Description
A rich and decadent dessert featuring a chocolate cake topped with a warm hot fudge sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup granulated sugar (for sauce)
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar (for sauce)
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for sauce)
- 1¼ cups boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- Add milk, oil (or butter), and vanilla. Stir until smooth and thick. Spread evenly in the prepared pan.
- In a separate bowl, mix both sugars with cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
- Slowly pour the boiling water over the top. Do not stir.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top looks set but the bottom is saucy.
- Let rest for 10–15 minutes. Serve warm, spooning the sauce from the bottom over each portion.
Notes
- Pour the hot water over the back of a spoon to keep the layers from mixing.
- To double the recipe, use a 9×13-inch pan and bake 5–10 minutes longer.
