Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (for sauce)
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar (for sauce)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for sauce)
  • 1¼ cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add milk, oil (or butter), and vanilla. Stir until smooth and thick. Spread evenly in the prepared pan.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix both sugars with cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
  5. Slowly pour the boiling water over the top. Do not stir.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the top looks set but the bottom is saucy.
  7. Let rest for 10–15 minutes. Serve warm, spooning the sauce from the bottom over each portion.

Notes

  • Pour the hot water over the back of a spoon to keep the layers from mixing.
  • To double the recipe, use a 9×13-inch pan and bake 5–10 minutes longer.
