Description
Golden-brown sourdough donuts, freshly fried and coated in vanilla glaze, cooling on a wire rack—light, fluffy, and made with a long-fermented dough.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sourdough starter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Oil for frying
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 2–4 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the sourdough starter, sugar, milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently until smooth.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick and cut out donut shapes.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the donuts in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the donuts and drain on paper towels.
- In a bowl, mix powdered sugar with milk to create a glaze.
- Dunk the warm donuts in the glaze and let them set on a wire rack.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is at the right temperature for even frying.
- Donuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Experiment with different flavors by adding spices or extracts to the glaze.
