A delicious and classic Southern dessert made with fresh peaches and a buttery batter, perfect for any occasion.

- 8 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (about 6–7 large peaches)
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for peaches)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for batter)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for sprinkling on top)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced peaches, 1 cup of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch (if using). Mix well and set aside.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the milk and melted butter to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Pour the batter into a greased baking dish.
- Evenly distribute the peach mixture over the batter.
- Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top of the peaches.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
- Can substitute frozen peaches if fresh are not available.
- Adjust sugar based on the sweetness of the peaches.
