Description

Classic Patty Melt Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¾ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp crispy beef bacon bits (or finely chopped cooked beef)
  • 1 tsp sweet relish
  • 1 tsp white sugar
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, combine ground beef, black pepper, salt, and onion powder. Mix gently until evenly seasoned.
  3. Shape the beef into 3 patties sized to fit the bread.
  4. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 2–3 minutes per side, then reduce heat to low and cook about 5 more minutes, until fully cooked through.
  5. While patties cook, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, beef bacon bits, relish, and sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.
  6. Heat a second skillet over medium-low heat. Place one slice of bread butter-side down.
  7. Top with 2 slices cheddar cheese, one beef patty, and 2 slices provolone cheese.
  8. Spread sauce on the unbuttered side of another bread slice and place it sauce-side down on top.
  9. Cook 2–3 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
  10. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Use gentle heat when grilling the sandwich to avoid burning the bread.
  • You can substitute rye with sourdough or sandwich bread if desired.
  • Let patties rest briefly for juicier texture.
